If you’re looking for seasonal decorations, fragrant household scents, unique gifts, or baskets of any kind, then Basket Country in Maineville, Ohio is a must-see!
I visited Basket Country a few weeks ago and owner Veta Goodknight gave me a tour. The shop is located on US Route 22 & 3 in Maineville, and when you pull in, it feels like you’re coming home. The yellow house has a large wraparound porch and friendly exterior. That feeling of home only increases as you step inside. The first thing I noticed was the scent. Basket Country stocks candles of all shapes, sizes and scents, making the interior cozy and fragrant.
As Veta showed me around, she told me about the history of Basket Country. This true “Mom and Pop” shop has been around for 25 years! Their shop started by selling mainly baskets, and has expanded to include unique gifts of all kinds, as well as full-sized wicker furniture.
Veta’s husband (an engineer) and daughter (an architect) designed the interior. They built shelves with electrical outlets for displays and designed the layout. Now, 25 years later, Veta says she wouldn’t change a thing. Other than the displays, of course!
Veta and her team change out the displays seasonally, to feature the changing holiday decor and to showcase new pieces. Fall and Winter decorations were a prominent feature, but Basket Country also stocks a few locally made items, including jam from The Jam and Jelly Lady in Lebanon, Ohio.
When I asked her how she keeps up with her inventory, Veta told me that she just listens to her customers and what they’re looking for. And from what I can tell, she’s doing a great job! There were so many pieces I wanted to take home with me, from owl decorations to holiday ornaments to pretty much every candle in the place!
In fact, I couldn’t resist taking something home. I settled on a Candleberry “Hot Maple Toddy” scented candle, and I’ve used it in my home every day since!
